The FCC is working to reduce early termination fees for consumers that have signed up for long term contracts with their mobile wireless carriers.
This has been a sore spot for consumers for some time now. Early termination fees can run up to $200.00, no matter how long into a wireless contract the customer was.
The FCC is looking to add a couple of provisions - one that allows the customers to switch with no fee at all for the first 30 days or within 10 days of getting their first bill. The second provision would pro-rate the early termination fees, so the longer a consumer honored the contract, the less he’d have to pay to get out of it.
The mobile phone companies are currently facing a number of lawsuits in State Courts because of angry customers and I can’t say that I blame them. It’s unfair and consumers should be allowed to leave a wireless company if they aren’t happy with them - without having to pay extra.
What are your thoughts on early termination fees?
