Today the European Union announced plans to begin licensing in-flight wireless services. The EU stated that wireless providers interested in providing in-flight phone services could get approval by the end of 2008.

The cost of making in-flight phone calls hasn’t been determined, but EU officials are hopeful that operators will keep their in-flight wireless services at a reasonable rate.

”We expect operators to be transparent and innovative in their price offerings. If consumers receive shock phone bills, the service will not take-off.” EU telecom commissioner Viviane Reding said in a statement.

Since safety is still a concern, the agency said that they’ll ensure this offering doesn’t interfere with other technology used in planes.

What are your thoughts on wireless use while you’re flying? Is it something you’re looking forward to?
