Cell phone ringtone downloads in Canada now qualify for Platinum & Gold selling status. The Canadian Recording Industry Association apparently awarded 43 artists with platinum status and 17 artists with gold status recently.
To qualify your ringtone for platinum or gold status you’ll need a minimum of 40,000 or 20,000 downloads, respectively. To get platinum or gold status with CD sales, you’d have to reach 100,000 or 50,000 sold, so quite a difference. On the other hand, 40,000 ringtone downloads is probably worthy of some sort of honor.
