Redsn0w 0.9.5 – How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G 4.0 OS on Mac OS X

iPhone Dev team has proved once again that they are always one step ahead of Apple. As we know, many Apple fans were disappointed with the absence of jailbreak for iPhone OS 3.1.3 Baseband 0.5.12.07 but knowing that Apple is on its way to release iPhone 4.0 OS, the best thing for iPhone Dev Team to do is to save exploits they have up sleeves for future jailbreak.

Recently iPhone dev team comes up with its first public iPhone 3G OS 4.0 Beta 1 jailbreak tool (or also known as Redsn0w 0.9.5). Anyway, below is the step-by-step guide to jailbreak iPhone 3G 4.0 with Redsn0w 0.9.5 (please note, this is only for Mac OS X).

How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G 4.0 with Redsn0w 0.9.5 on Mac OS X?

1. For iPhone developer, you can simply head over to Apple site and download iPhone OS 4.0 firmware. Alternatively you can have a leaked version of iPhone OS 4.0 firmware (iPhone1,2_4.0_8A230m_Restore.ipsw) for iPhone 3G.

2. Download iPhone OS 4.0 & install it on your iPhone 3G

3. Download Redsn0w 0.9.5. Please check this link for latest redsnow version because the redsnow will be updated from time to time.

4. Fire up Redsn0w 0.9.5 and select your stock iPhone1,2_4.0_8A230m_Restore.ipsw file (you’ve already used this to update your iPhone3G to 4.0beta1)

5. Select "Install Cydia" and click "Next". Use DFU mode to install the jailbreak.

6. When your iPhone3G comes back up, you’ll notice Cydia has a blank white icon. You’ll also notice Cydia has no sources. Go to the Sources panel and add this repo: http://apt.saurik.com/cydia-3.7 (be sure you have a carrier or wifi signal first!).

When Cydia restarts, you should see its real logo now, and the standard sources should be ready to use.

Honestly, we have no idea what Apple has up its sleeves for us this year but to see impressively enticing leaked photos of the next generation iPhone circulating in the blogosphere is very exciting. We hope to see more of iPhone 4G mock-ups. Fingers crossed, we hope Apple could do something way much better than the mock-ups. So what's up with this post?

We are quite sure that the new iPhone will have a brand new casing if the framework of iPhone is to be retained.

Graham, over at Mac Predictions, has taken his imagination to the next level by creating some mock-ups images for the 3rd Generation iPhone (iPhone 4G).

Here is one with a textured back and metallic borders.

And one complimented by a black metallic bezel on the front.

Though these mock-ups do not give any information about features of the new iPhone, they still give a really good impression on the color scheme and the looks. If, for the sake of argument, one of these mock-ups turn out to be the new iPhone, I would go for the latter phone (black metallic bezel on the front).

iPhone Jailbreak pawned by New MacBook and MacBook Pro

State-of-the-art features and stylish appearances blend together to push the new MacBook Pro and MacBook laptops to a whole next level. But in this post we are not going to talk about all mundane features that people largely in the blogosphere talk about, rather we would like to highlight a likely-never-heard feature but have huge impact on a portion of Apple users.

We talk about the great battle between Apple and iPhone hackers. The latest laptop lineup apparently turn the table into Apple's advantage as Apple manages to put a complete halt on iPhone hackers and the "jailbreak community" activities. That’s right, Apple has tweaked the MacBook and MacBook Pro to thwart jailbreaking efforts using the popular Pwnage Tool solution.

It is reported that iPhone and iPhone 3G users with the new all-aluminum MacBooka and MacBook Pro laptops didn't manage to jailbreak their iPhones in DFU restore mode. As the iPhone community know, both Quickpwn and PwnageTool require the iPhone need to be detected in DFU restore mode by the computer in order to perform the jailbreak procedure. In essence, the new laptops are effectively killing the jailbreak option for many Mac users.

Solution? No real solution for the latest Apple's step-up but you can always go finding an older Apple laptop or find a Windows machine to jailbreak the iPhone.

Better Performances with iPhone 2.1 Software Update

Apple just announced firmware 2.1 for the iPhone and iPod touch and it's claimed that no more crashes will ever occur with the new update. This new update brings enormous improvements on the overall performances which include the promise of fewer dropped calls, big battery improvement, and faster backups. While it sounds too good to be true let us see what people find about this new update.

Fewer dropped calls - 40 percent of Wired.com readers report that they're getting fewer dropped calls than they did before the update.

Increased 3G download speeds - Donovan Lewis, the administrator of Test My iPhone reported that more iPhone users enjoy better better download speed after the upgrade with the occasions of people getting speed between 100kbps - 300kbps is fewer after the update.

More bars and better reception - Everyone that has applied the update seem to generally agree that they get better receptions.

A new iPhone software update just hit iTunes. Version 2.0.2 is described as a bug fix release with little additional information. As usual, a version can be downloaded directly from Apple's servers or through iTunes. And, as always, this update will de-pwn your iPhone, should you have previously pwned it for command-line shell access and third-party Cydia applications.

Quirk in Belgian law drives iPhones near $1,000

BRUSSELS, Belgium - Belgians finally get the chance to buy one of Apple Inc.'s coveted iPhones on Friday — at the highest prices in the world. The 8-gigabyte iPhone will retail for 525 euros ($825) — more than four times the U.S. price of $199. The 16-gigabyte version costs 615 euros ($966). The same phone would cost $299 in the U.S.

Belgian Enterprise Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne blamed a local law that forbids companies subsidizing one product by charging more for something else. He said he will try to scrap this rule in September because it stops phone operators from selling handsets inexpensively along with fixed service contracts, as is common elsewhere. For instance, Dutch customers over the border can pay just 1 euro ($1.57) for an iPhone if they pick a contract with operator T-Mobile.

The Belgian iPhone carrier, Mobistar, claims it isn't worried that high prices will deter customers. It is expecting lines at stores in Brussels when the phones go on sale Friday. For the first few weeks, shoppers won't be allowed to buy more than one iPhone each — even if they could afford it.
